The 90s Combat Flight Sim Classic Returns
The late 90s flight sim scene just got a serious nostalgia hit. F-22: Air Dominance Fighter is now available on Steam, published by the revived MicroProse and originally developed by Digital Image Design.
Originally released in 1997, F-22 was one of those PC sims that felt massive at the time. Deep avionics, big dynamic battlefields, and the standout AWACS mode that let you command the air war before jumping straight into the cockpit. It was serious, but not impossible to get into, which is part of why people still remember it.
What’s New
This Steam version keeps the original game intact but adds some welcome upgrades:
- 6DoF head tracking with TrackIR and OpenTrack support
- Resolution options from chunky 320×200 all the way up to 4K
- 17 achievements
- Mod support
- Nearly 100 fixes for modern system stability
The ability to run in authentic low resolutions is a nice touch. If you are the kind of person who still keeps a Windows 98 machine around, this is about as close as you will get without digging out your original disc.
Still the Same Big Sim
You still get:
- 90 plus missions across seven campaigns
- A huge 4.5 million square kilometre Red Sea theatre
- Dynamic air, land, and sea units
- Over 50 enemy types and 30 weapon systems
- The full AWACS command mode
For retro PC fans, this is a solid preservation win. No fan patches, no weird workarounds. Just a 90s combat sim running properly on modern hardware.
