Chained Echoes
Chained Echoes is a 16-bit-style Japanese-style role-playing game developed solo by Matthias Linda and published by Deck13 Interactive. It released in December 2022 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
Set on the fictional continent of Valandis, the game follows a group of mercenaries and soldiers drawn together across a world defined by perpetual war between three kingdoms. The story pulls from classic JRPG conventions while keeping its own tone, blending political conflict with character-driven arcs and a setting that incorporates both swords-and-sorcery fantasy and mechanized combat in the form of sky armor, large pilotable mechs that feature prominently in battle.
The combat system is turn-based and built around an overdrive gauge that rewards measured play. Push too hard and your party becomes vulnerable; keep the gauge in an optimal range and your characters perform at their best. The system discourages grinding by design, keeping enemy scaling in check and pushing the player toward tactical decision-making rather than repetition.
Visually, the game draws clearly from the SNES era, with pixel art that references the style of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Breath of Fire. The soundtrack, composed by Eddie Marianukroh, reinforces that framing throughout.
Chained Echoes was a notable release in the indie JRPG space because it was built largely by one person over several years without a studio behind it. The scale of the game, its runtime, and the polish of its systems made it stand out from other solo-developed titles attempting the same genre. A Complete Edition, including additional content released after launch, was announced for a physical Switch cartridge release through Piko Interactive in 2025.
