Panzer Commander is a World War II tank simulation released in 1998 for Windows 95 by Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI). The game puts the player in command of a three-tank platoon during historical battles across Europe, Russia, and North Africa. The player can take the role of German, Russian, British, or American forces in single scenarios, or lead a German or Russian platoon through one of six linear campaigns that follow the unit's actual wartime movements. The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes: LAN and TCP/IP play support deathmatch and capture-the-flag, but lack cooperative campaign play. A built-in mission editor allows players to create custom scenarios and campaigns, extending the game's life. The 3D engine, optimized for then-current accelerators like 3dfx Voodoo and PowerVR PCX2, renders detailed tanks, terrain with elevation that affects speed and protection, and effects such as recoil, smoke, and explosions. The crew reacts to the environment and speaks in native languages (German or Russian). While praised for its graphics and accessible command interface, Panzer Commander was criticized for static campaign structures, repetitive enemy AI, and unreliable platoon pathfinding. A v1.1 patch was released to address some AI issues but arrived after the initial reviews.

Beautiful tank action that falls short of being the simulation it wants to be.

Original Hardware
Original CD-ROM release runs on Windows 95/98 with a Pentium 133 and 16 MB RAM. A 3D accelerator like a Voodoo1 or PowerVR PCX2 is strongly recommended for full visual quality. Boxed copies are readily found on eBay and at second-hand software shops.
Modern Re-release
No official digital re-release exists. The game must be obtained via physical media or tracked down through abandonware channels, as SSI no longer distributes it.
Emulation / Other Options
Runs under Windows 95 compatibility mode on Windows XP or via virtualization with a Windows 95 guest. For modern systems, the game can be launched with dgVoodoo2 to wrap the 3D calls for DirectX 11, or using a Glide wrapper for Voodoo-specific features.
