Axis and Allies is the PC adaptation of the classic World War II strategy board game, developed by Meyer/Glass Interactive and published by Hasbro Interactive in 1998. It brings the tabletop experience to Windows 95/98, supporting up to five players controlling the major powers: Germany, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, divided into Axis and Allied teams. The turn-based gameplay follows a familiar cycle of movement, combat resolution via dice rolls, and unit production using Industrial Production Certificates (IPCs). Players command a variety of generalized units, infantry, armor, fighters, bombers, battleships, aircraft carriers, submarines, transports, along with anti-aircraft guns and industrial centers. Advanced weapon research allows investment in rockets, jets, long-range aircraft, and heavy bombers. The game incorporates digitized newsreel footage for cutscenes and round-end summaries presented in a newspaper format. Highly configurable, it lets players adjust unit attack and defense values, starting forces, and victory conditions. Multiplayer is supported over internet, LAN, modem, and hotseat, while AI opponents fill in for missing humans. The adaptation stays true to the board game’s basic systems, though the AI is notoriously weak, making solo play an uneven challenge.
