FIFA 99 is a football simulation developed and published by EA Sports for Windows. Released in 1998, it shifts focus from international tournaments to club football, featuring fully licensed leagues from over a dozen nations, including England, Italy, Spain, Germany, Brazil, and the United States. Players can compete in league seasons, domestic cups, and the European Super League. The game boasts updated rosters with accurate player names, faces, and attributes, as well as a player editor for custom transfers. Gameplay improvements over FIFA 98 and World Cup 98 include interruptible player animations, directional chest traps, sliding shots, and more intelligent AI that creates realistic attacking runs and tighter defensive marking. Goalkeeper behavior was overhauled to catch and distribute the ball more naturally. The game supports up to four players on a single PC via gamepads, though network multiplayer is limited. FIFA 99 also introduces a reactive crowd with chants and singing, and play-by-play commentary. The soundtrack features electronic music and a Fatboy Slim track, which drew mixed reactions. It was the last FIFA title to use the classic engine before the series moved to a new 3D engine with FIFA 2000.
