The tactical shooter that finally gets everything almost right.
Ghost Recon ditches pre-mission planning for real-time orders and delivers the best tactical action yet. AI hiccups and odd restrictions keep it from perfection, but the atmosphere and multiplayer are unmatched.
About This Game

Released in 2001, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is a tactical first-person shooter developed by Red Storm Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. Set in 2008, the game follows the elite U.S. Army unit known as the Ghosts as they conduct covert operations in Eastern Europe to counter a resurgent ultranationalist regime. Players command up to six soldiers split into fireteams, issuing real-time orders during missions rather than relying on pre-planned routes. The game emphasizes realism, with one-shot kills, realistic ballistics, and an injury system that degrades soldier performance. Ghost Recon introduced an RPG-like progression system where soldiers gain skill points based on mission performance, adding a layer of strategic persistence. Originally launched for Windows, it later saw ports to Mac, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube. The game was acclaimed for its graphics, audio, and multiplayer stability, and it spawned two expansion packs: Desert Siege and Island Thunder.

How to Play TodayYour options for running this game in 2026
Original Hardware
Original CD-ROM releases are widely available second-hand. Requires a Windows 98/ME/XP PC with a 450 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, and a 16 MB Direct3D-compatible video card. The game supports LAN and online play via GameSpy (now defunct), so direct IP connections or third-party tools are needed for multiplayer.
Modern Re-release
Available digitally on Steam and GOG for $9.99, bundled with the Desert Siege and Island Thunder expansions. The modern releases include compatibility fixes for Windows 10/11 and support higher resolutions. No DRM on GOG version.
Emulation / Other Options
Not typically emulated; the native Windows version runs well on modern systems with compatibility mode or community patches like dgVoodoo2 for improved rendering.
