The self-published shooter that's funnier, smarter, and more customizable than anything the big guys shipped in 1998.

POCG VERDICT
It's not Quake 2, and thank God for that.
GunMetal is the first-person shooter that laughs at itself, and somehow makes you laugh right along with it. Customizable mechs, hysterical billboards, and AI that actually fights back.
About This Game

GunMetal is a first-person shooter developed and self-published by Mad Genius Software in 1998 for Windows 95/98. Set in a dystopian future where corporations rule the galaxy, the player assumes the role of a remote pilot controlling a heavily armed RPV (Remotely Piloted Vehicle) through a neural link for the Nataka Corporate Empire. The game distinguishes itself with a dark comedic tone, extensive mech customization, and enemy artificial intelligence that actively dodges, flanks, and swarms. Between missions, players salvage enemy wreckage for cash and spend it on new chassis, armour, and over thirty weapons and gadgets, including railguns, auto-sentries, holographic decoys, and a disintegrator. The single-player campaign alternates between search-and-destroy, rescue, and escort objectives, while unexpected billboards and propaganda spots keep the mood light. Multiplayer supports up to eight players in deathmatch, with a handicapping system that gives weaker players more funds to level the playing field. GunMetal was praised for its interactive music system that blends tracks seamlessly as the player moves through levels, and its software-rendered graphics featured real-time reflective water that rivalled hardware-accelerated titles of the era. It requires a Pentium 133, 32 MB RAM, and a 3DFX Voodoo-compatible accelerator for optimal visuals, though it also runs in software mode on standard SVGA hardware.

How to Play TodayYour options for running this game in 2026
Original Hardware
Original CD-ROM copies are still available on eBay and retro game stores, typically around $15–30 complete. You'll need a Windows 95/98 PC with a 3DFX Voodoo card or a standard SVGA card for software mode. A patch is required for some cards (e.g., Canopus Pure3DIILX) and fixes stability issues. The CD must remain in the drive to play.
Emulation / Other Options
Best run on modern systems using the dgVoodoo2 glide wrapper, which translates 3DFX calls to Direct3D 11/12. Drop the DLLs into the game folder, mount the disc image via virtual drive, and apply the official patch. A virtual machine with Windows 98 also works, but getting 3DFX acceleration inside a VM is tricky. No official digital release exists.
