POCG VERDICT
The second best MMORPG on the planet at launch, and for a Tolkien fanatic, the absolute best.
A faithful, gorgeous Middle-earth MMO that launched with surprising polish. Some itemization and customization gaps, but the world, story, and music system are unmatched.
About This Game

The Lord of the Rings Online (LotRO) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth during the events of The Lord of the Rings. Developed and published by Turbine, Inc., it launched on April 24, 2007, for Windows. Players create a character from the races of Men, Elves, Dwarves, or Hobbits and embark on an epic story intertwined with the Fellowship's quest, while exploring a vast, detailed recreation of Eriador. The game features seven classes (Burglar, Captain, Champion, Guardian, Hunter, Lore-master, Minstrel) and a skill-based progression system augmented by deeds, titles, and traits. Combat is traditional hotkey-based, with group content emphasized through the fellowship system. LotRO introduced a unique music system allowing players to perform live instruments, built-in voice chat, and a monster play PvP mode where players control agents of Sauron. The original release required a subscription; the game later transitioned to a free-to-play model in 2010. With regular expansions, LotRO continues to be supported and expanded, offering one of the most faithful and immersive Middle-earth experiences in gaming.
