POCG VERDICT
TrueSwing is the future. The architect is the bonus. The announcers are a crime.
The most innovative golf sim in years, with a mouse-swing that feels like real golf and an editor that gives you unlimited courses. Even the 2D slide-show can't ruin it.
About This Game

PGA Championship Golf 1999 Edition is a golf simulation developed by Sierra Sports and published by Sierra for Windows 95/98. It distinguishes itself with TrueSwing, a mouse-based swing interface that maps the physical movement of the mouse to the club head, replacing the traditional three-click timing bar. The game ships with seven real-world courses, including Royal Birkdale and Sahalee Country Club, and includes a comprehensive course architect that lets players design and share their own layouts. Multiplayer is handled through ReadyPlay, allowing competitors to play at their own pace and sync at the end of each hole. The game supports 16-bit color, features ambient environmental sounds and customizable player models, and offers a full install option that removes the need for the CD-ROM. While its 2D slide-show presentation was already dated by 1999, PGA Championship Golf 1999 Edition was praised for its innovative control method and its generous editor, making it one of the most complete golf packages of its era.

Original Hardware
Original two-CD releases show up on auction sites sporadically; complete-in-box copies are uncommon. Runs natively on Windows 95 or Windows 98; requires a 4x CD-ROM drive and a DirectX-compatible sound card.
Emulation / Other Options
This Windows 95/98 title does not run reliably on modern 64-bit Windows without assistance. The best experience is via a virtual machine running Windows 98 SE (using VMware or 86Box) with the Guest Additions drivers installed. dgVoodoo2 can wrap the DirectDraw calls on modern Windows, but occasional video glitches may remain. The full install option (440 MB) eliminates CD swapping once installed.
