Star Wars: Rebellion is a grand strategy game set in the Star Wars universe, developed and published by LucasArts. Released in 1998 for Windows 95/98, the game allows players to command either the Rebel Alliance or the Galactic Empire in a campaign for galactic domination set shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star. Up to 200 star systems are available across multiple sectors, with the size of the galaxy determining game length. The core gameplay is split into two layers: a strategic management layer where players oversee resource production, diplomacy, fleet construction, and mission assignments, and a real-time tactical combat layer that triggers when opposing fleets meet. The game is heavily character-driven, featuring 55 named characters drawn from the original trilogy, Timothy Zahn novels, and Dark Horse comics, each with unique attributes that affect mission success. Objectives are asymmetric: the Rebellion must capture Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, and Coruscant, while the Empire must capture Luke Skywalker, Mon Mothma, and destroy the Rebel base. Despite its ambitious scope and faithful Star Wars aesthetic, Rebellion was criticized for a cumbersome interface, poor AI, and lengthy, tedious gameplay that many felt did not satisfy real-time strategy expectations.
