POCG VERDICT
Capcom's forgotten dungeon crawler where your own body heat will murder you and you'll love every second.
Capcom's PS2 brawler was a dungeon crawler fever dream of zombie ninjas, overheating androids, and combos so deep the Tekken crowd would cry. Rare and ridiculous.
About This Game

Crimson Tears is an action dungeon crawler developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation 2 in 2004. Set in a futuristic cyberpunk Tokyo, the game follows three battle androids, Amber, Kadie, and Tokio, who escape from a high-security facility after uncovering a sinister plot by the ARMA corporation. ARMA, a military bio-weapons manufacturer, has been conducting illegal experiments, and the trio must fight through interconnected dungeon stages to topple the conspiracy.

The game features a distinctive heat-gauge mechanic that punishes prolonged combat. As players chain attacks and move through levels, the androids' temperature rises. At maximum heat, the screen turns red and the character gains double speed and attack power but takes amplified damage and steadily loses health, potentially fatal if not managed. Cooling items and strategic pauses are essential for survival.

Each android specializes in a different combat style: Amber is a dual-wielding ninja, Kadie wields massive buster swords, and Tokio is a gun-focused fighter capable of dual-wielding firearms. All three can unlock and upgrade combos and customize weapons with elemental and status effects. Enemy design is notably varied, ranging from ninjas and zombies to zombie ninjas, techno-vampires, and the persistent Mr. Black. Enemies level alongside the player, adapting to challenge even on repeated visits to earlier areas. Boss encounters include liquid ninjas, time-bending reapers, and biblically named foes, each demanding different tactics.

Crimson Tears was released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 and did not see a digital rerelease. It remains a cult favorite among fans of unconventional action titles, praised for its demanding combat and distinctive overheating system.
