Street Fighter Alpha 2
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Capcom for arcades in 1996, with a PlayStation conversion later that year (Japan) and 1997 (North America). It is the third installment in the Street Fighter Alpha sub-series, a prequel to Street Fighter II, and builds on the foundation of its predecessors with refined mechanics and a larger character roster.
The game introduces a three-level Alpha Meter, inherited from Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which allows players to execute Alpha Combos (powerful custom chain sequences) and Alpha Counters (defensive counters that interrupt an opponent's attack). A universal air-blocking mechanic lets fighters guard against aerial attacks, adding a new defensive layer. The roster includes series veterans Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Sagat alongside newcomers such as Sakura (a schoolgirl obsessed with Ryu), Dan (a comically weak fighter in a pink gi), Adon (a frenetic Muay Thai fighter), Charlie (Guile's comrade with a shared move set), and the demonic Akuma, who can perform the screen-filling Raging Demon super move. Returning characters Chun-Li and Sagat received significant overhauls, including new special moves and combos.
The arcade version ran on Capcom's CP System II hardware, featuring vibrant sprite work, detailed backgrounds, and a high-energy soundtrack. The PlayStation port preserved the core gameplay but suffered from notable load times between matches, a trade-off for the home console conversion. Extra features included a versus mode, training options, and a secret code to unlock the overpowered "Shin Akuma."
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is often celebrated for its fluid combat, distinctive art style, and the depth of its combo system. It remains a fan-favorite entry in the Street Fighter canon, balancing accessibility with technical play.
