Tex Murphy: Overseer
Tex Murphy: Overseer is a 1998 3D graphic adventure game developed and published by Access Software for Windows 95/98. It is the fifth entry in the Tex Murphy series and a prequel to the critically acclaimed The Pandora Directive. The game uses full-motion video (FMV) and a 3D virtual world exploration engine, continuing the series’ blend of detective noir, science fiction, and humor.
The story is told as a flashback: Tex, on a date with long-time friend Chelsee Bando, recounts his first case as a private investigator in post-World War III San Francisco. The case begins when a mysterious woman named Sylvia hires Tex to investigate her father’s apparent suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge. As Tex digs deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy involving a crazed billionaire seeking world domination.
Gameplay cycles between FMV cutscenes, interrogations (where players choose topics from a notepad to question characters), and exploration in a first-person 3D environment. Players can examine nearly every object, open drawers, and find clues. Periodically, puzzles must be solved to progress. The game offers two modes: Entertainment Mode, which allows hint access and puzzle skipping, and Gamer Mode, which disables hints and forces players to complete all puzzles without assistance. Overseer also introduced DVD-ROM support, putting all game data on a single disc for those with the hardware.
Upon release, Overseer was praised for its acting (with Chris Jones reprising his role as Tex) and production values, but criticized for its linear storyline, a consequence of being a prequel, and occasional technical issues like sluggish performance on lower-end systems and random freezing during disc swaps. A 3D hardware patch was later released to improve visual performance. The game remains a notable entry in the FMV adventure genre, though it is often considered less ambitious than its predecessor.
