Released in 1998 by Epic MegaGames and Digital Extremes, Unreal is a first-person shooter that quickly became a benchmark for 3D graphics and artificial intelligence. The game places players in the boots of Prisoner 849, a convict whose transport ship crashes on the alien world of Na Pali. What follows is a desperate fight for survival against hostile wildlife, the militant Skaarj, and puzzles woven into sprawling, atmospheric environments. Unreal was built on the brand-new Unreal Engine, which delivered then-stunning real-time lighting, reflective water, and richly detailed textures. Levels range from cramped underground corridors to vast outdoor chasms, with a heavy emphasis on exploration and environmental storytelling. The weapon lineup is equally memorable: the razor-sharp Razorjack, the crystalline Stinger, and the versatile ASMD shock rifle each feature dual firing modes that reward creative combat. Enemy AI was a major leap forward, with creatures that dodge, flank, and even perform roll-and-recover maneuvers, forcing players to stay on their toes. While the single-player campaign won praise for its scale and ambition, the game also shipped with competitive multiplayer modes, though performance over early internet connections was often choppy. Unreal’s engine would go on to power some of the most iconic shooters of the next decade, but the game itself remains a landmark experience for its sheer visual spectacle and the way it pushed first-person gameplay beyond simple corridor shooters.

How to Play TodayYour options for running this game in 2026
Original Hardware
Original CD-ROM copies are plentiful on eBay, often under $10. Requires a Windows 95/98 PC with a Pentium 200 MMX or better, 32 MB RAM, and a 3dfx Voodoo card for hardware acceleration. The game still runs on period-appropriate retro rigs without much fuss.
Modern Re-release
Available digitally on GOG and Steam for $9.99, regularly discounted to as low as $2. Both versions are pre-patched for modern Windows and include the Return to Na Pali expansion. The GOG release is DRM-free.
Emulation / Other Options
Runs natively on Windows 10/11 via the GOG or Steam versions. For original retail discs, a few compatibility tweaks (like running in Windows 95 compatibility mode) may be needed; the GOG version handles all of that automatically.
