EU Drops Mandatory Game Preservation Law, Adopts Voluntary Code Instead

The EU has reportedly decided against mandatory game preservation legislation, choosing a voluntary industry code instead, disappointing preservation advocates.

The European Union will not pursue a mandatory law requiring video game preservation, according to reports. Instead, it is said to be opting for a voluntary industry code. That’s a significant blow to preservation advocates who had been pushing for legally binding measures to protect online-dependent and delisted titles. A voluntary code has no enforcement mechanism, and history suggests that game companies are unlikely to prioritize preservation without legal obligation. The Stop Killing Games campaign and other groups have been rallying for stronger action, and this decision makes their work that much harder.
