Out Run is an arcade driving game released by Sega in 1986, designed and directed by Yu Suzuki. Rather than competitive racing, it offered the fantasy of a leisurely high-speed drive across sun-drenched, European-style scenery in a Ferrari Testarossa convertible, a passenger beside the player and a choice of in-car radio tracks setting the tone. At the end of each stage the road forked, letting players pick their own route through a branching map of distinct environments toward one of several endings. Suzuki researched the game on a study tour of Europe, filming real roads and landscapes, and chose the Testarossa after seeing a red convertible outside a casino in Monaco. Running on upgraded Super Scaler hardware, Out Run pushed dense, colourful sprite scaling at a smooth clip, and its deluxe cabinet used a moving hydraulic seat. The combination of relaxed tone, memorable music, and technical polish made it one of the defining arcade games of the 1980s and the start of a long-running series. It was ported to nearly every home system of its era and remains a touchstone of arcade design.
