Yamaha Debuts Advanced YST Bass Tech in New Multimedia Speakers

Yamaha's new patented Advanced YST technology promises bigger bass from small multimedia speakers, debuting in the powered MS50 and MS55D systems.

Yamaha announced Advanced YST today, a new patented speaker technology aimed at squeezing real bass out of small computer and multimedia speakers. The first two systems to carry it are the powered MS50 and MS55D.

The core of it is an Adjustable Negative Impedance Converter, a device that self-adjusts the negative impedance in the current, steering the motion of the speaker cone and force it to hold a stiff, rigid shape. A stiffer cone moves air better and helps contain low-frequency waves inside the cabinet, which Yamaha says translates to more accurate, more detailed sound, better-regulated sound pressure at the bass port, and more efficient use of the amplifier’s power.

Yamaha claims these small systems beat much larger and more expensive speaker packages. Every speaker maker says that. My desktop speakers are ready to be embarrassed if it turns out to be true.
