Double Fine and Compulsion Regain Independence, Keep Their IPs in Xbox Restructure

Double Fine and Compulsion Games return to independence as Xbox lets them go, with both studios retaining their game catalogs and receiving investment.

Xbox’s massive restructuring this week includes a rare preservation win: Double Fine and Compulsion Games are leaving the company to return to independence, and both studios will retain ownership of their game catalogs and IPs. The move was confirmed as part of what CEO Asha Sharma called “the most significant restructure in Xbox history,” which also includes the sale of Ninja Theory and Undead Labs.

Double Fine said it was “thankful to everyone at Xbox for seven great years together, and for working with us to reach an outcome which preserves our history and culture.” Compulsion, meanwhile, explicitly noted it will keep the rights to Contrast, We Happy Few, and South of Midnight.

IP retention in studio departures is anything but standard. More often, a publisher holds onto the games while the team walks away empty-handed. The fact that Xbox let these studios go with their history intact is a genuine preservation victory. Psychonauts, Contrast, and South of Midnight won’t become licensing orphans because they no longer belong to a platform holder that may or may not care about them in ten years.

It’s a small but meaningful bright spot in a brutal wave of job cuts, and it gives both studios a real foundation to build from as independents.
