About This Game

SSX is an extreme snowboarding game developed and published by EA Sports BIG, released as a launch title for the PlayStation 2 on October 26, 2000 in North America. It was among the first wave of games available for Sony's second-generation console and introduced EA's arcade-style action sports franchise.

The game features eight selectable characters, each with individual stat profiles covering speed, stability, edging, and trick ability. Players compete across a series of mountain courses in two primary modes: Race, where the goal is to place first, and Showoff, where points are earned by performing tricks off jumps, rails, and terrain features. The trick system rewards timing and creativity: players chain rotations, grabs, and special moves in mid-air, building a boost meter that, when filled, unlocks higher-tier tricks and maximum speed. Courses feature hidden shortcuts marked by breakable glass signs, and learning these alternate paths is essential for competitive race placement.

World Circuit mode is the core progression track, in which players advance through increasingly difficult courses, earning experience points that can be allocated to improve their rider's stats. Winning events also unlocks new boards, costumes, and a bonus course.

SSX was a commercial success and helped define the PlayStation 2's early library. It was praised for its fast-paced gameplay, course design, and the addictive loop of mastering tricks and shortcuts. The game spawned a long-running franchise, with SSX Tricky (2001) and SSX 3 (2003) expanding on the formula to further critical acclaim.
