ORPHEUS: TO HELL AND BACK
ORPHEUS: TO HELL AND BACK is a retro action-puzzle adventure developed by Italian studios Studio Loading and Kibou Entertainment, originally funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over €16,000. The game first appeared as a physical cartridge for the Game Boy Color, embracing the hardware’s limitations with chiptune audio and pixel art, and later received a digital release on Steam published by Tokyo-based Alunite Inc.
Set in a stylized vision of ancient Greek mythology, players take control of Orpheus on his descent into the underworld to rescue Eurydice. The core mechanic revolves around Orpheus’s lyre: three distinct melodies can charm, pacify, or instil fear in enemies, turning them into tools to solve environmental puzzles or clear paths. Levels are designed as a blend of action sequences and brain-teaser rooms, with multiple strategic options for each encounter.
Visually, the game adopts a chibi-anime aesthetic typical of 1980s and early 1990s Japanese animation, with adorable character sprites and backgrounds that evoke the Game Boy Color’s palette. The soundtrack is entirely chiptune, composed to complement the hardware’s sound capabilities. The game supports both English and Japanese languages.
While the physical cartridge release has limited availability, the Steam version makes the game accessible to a wider audience at a budget price, preserving a quirky, music-driven take on the Orpheus myth for retro enthusiasts.
