Ganbare Goemon Collection Sneaks in Never-Ported Famicom Shmup Crisis Force
M2's Ganbare Goemon collection sneaks the 1991 Famicom shmup Crisis Force onto Switch, PS5, and Steam, marking its first port. For preservation fans, the hidden bonus might be the real story.
M2’s Ganbare Goemon! Daishuugou collection launched today in Japan for Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Steam, bringing together 13 games from Konami’s Goemon series. Tucked inside as a hidden bonus is Crisis Force, a 1991 Famicom shoot ’em up that has never been ported until now.
Crisis Force was Konami’s final shooter for the Famicom, developed with the custom VRC4 mapper chip to push the hardware with four-way scrolling and massive bosses. The soundtrack came from Konami Kukeiha Club members Jun Chuma, Kenichi Matsubara, and Yasuhiko Manno. In an interview with denfaminicogamer, producer Ryosaku Ueno explained that the decision to include it was his way of preserving the game before the opportunity slipped away, even if he expected few players to appreciate it.
For retro fans, the hidden shmup may be the collection’s real draw. The Steam version is region-locked, unfortunately, leaving import copies on Switch or PS5 as the cleanest path. Still, a bonus that quietly delivers a preservation milestone is exactly the kind of move worth celebrating.
