Hyperkin Captain+ N64 Controller with Hall Effect Stick Now Up for Pre-Order
Hyperkin's upgraded Captain+ N64 controller adds a Hall Effect analog stick, priced at $30 and shipping August 18 in four transparent colors.
Hyperkin has opened pre-orders for the Captain+, a wired Nintendo 64 controller that replaces the original’s drift-prone analog stick with a Hall Effect sensor. Priced at $30, it’s set to ship on August 18 in four transparent colors: Red, Green, Purple, and Frost. The controller is compatible with original N64 consoles and any aftermarket system that uses the standard N64 port.
Hall Effect sticks have become a go-to upgrade for retro gamepads, eliminating the physical contacts that grind down and cause drift. The original N64 stick is infamous for going loose and floppy after moderate use, so a $30 drop-in replacement with Hall Effect tech is a welcome addition. Hyperkin previously sold a standard “Captain” controller, but the new Plus model aims for a better balance of price and accuracy.
Earlier this year, 8BitDo released its own N64-style controller. As with any budget retro controller, the real test will be how it holds up under extended play, but the specs on paper are a solid attempt at solving a decades-old problem.
