RPCS3 Now Runs PS3 Games on GPUs From 2007, Because Someone Went and Bought the Old Cards to Try
RPCS3 added support for ATI's TeraScale 1 GPUs from 2007 to 2009, running PS3 games on hardware older than the console itself. Open source keeps ancient cards alive.
Most of the tech world spends its energy chasing the next GPU. RPCS3 just spent its energy going the other way, all the way back to 2007, and the result is one of the most quietly wonderful preservation stories I have read this year. The open-source PlayStation 3 emulator now supports ATI’s TeraScale 1 graphics cards, the Radeon HD 2000, 3000 and 4000 series. These are cards that shipped between 2007 and 2009. Some of them are older than the PS3 itself. And they can now render PS3 games.
This did not happen by accident. A developer who goes by AniLeo went out and bought the old hardware specifically to find out whether it would work, then dug through the failures until it did. The emulator already ran on the slightly newer TeraScale 2 cards (the HD 5000 and 6000 series) thanks to the open-source mesa r600 Linux driver, and the question was simple: could the same driver carry the generation before it? The answer, it turns out, was yes, once a couple of stubborn problems were solved.
The interesting part is why it did not work at first. These 2007-era GPUs only report OpenGL 3.3 support, so the levels had to be overridden before RPCS3’s renderer would even start. Then the emulator would crash creating a buffer, and the real culprit was that these old cards lack a feature called shader storage buffer objects that RPCS3’s code simply assumed every supported GPU had. Adding a check for it, and turning the feature off when it is missing, was enough. That fix went in as a single pull request. kd-11 handled the renderer side; AniLeo did the sourcing, debugging and testing. It is worth noting the whole thing is Linux-only, running on mesa’s r600 driver, because AMD’s ancient Windows OpenGL driver is too poor to be worth the trouble. Open source is what keeps this hardware alive.
Now, be clear about the ceiling. The most powerful TeraScale 1 card, the HD 4890, handles simpler games at playable speeds but chokes on anything graphically heavy, and the weaker cards need the resolution dropped to a brutal 273p (that is PSP resolution) just to move. The weakest one tested, the HD 2600 XT, is actually less powerful than the PS3’s own RSX chip and cannot really do the job at all. Nobody is finishing Persona 5 on a fifteen-year-old budget card. What matters is that the picture comes out correctly, which the team calls a starting step, with optimization to come.
Two things stuck with me. First, RPCS3 lowered its minimum GPU requirement again, down to the 2007 Radeon HD 2900 XT, and the team points out that since it first wrote requirements down in 2017, that bar has only ever moved down, never up. Think about how rare that is. Nearly every piece of software you own demands more of your machine each year; this one demands less. Second, and I have to smile at this, the blog post ends with a line I do not see often anymore: “No AI tools were used to write this blog post.” People who buy old graphics cards out of pocket to prove a dead console can run on them, and who still write up the results by hand. That is the preservation scene at its best, and it is exactly the spirit POCG exists to point at.
