Kirby’s Dream Land
Kirby's Dream Land is a platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy in 1992. It marks the debut of Kirby, the round pink hero who would go on to headline a long-running series, here rendered in monochrome as a simple white blob. The game establishes the character's signature move, inhaling enemies and objects to swallow them or spit them back out as projectiles, though the ability to copy enemy powers would not arrive until the sequel. Designed by a young Masahiro Sakurai, later of Super Smash Bros. fame, it is short, soft, and deliberately approachable, built to welcome players who found other games too punishing, while offering a harder mode for those who wanted more. Its breezy difficulty and gentle, pastel-bright tone are exactly its appeal: not every game needs to be a challenge, and this is the definitive version of the one you play half-asleep on a lounge chair with the sun in your eyes. Well received as a charming, accessible debut, it launched one of Nintendo's most enduring franchises. It is the summer game you hand to the person who does not usually play games, so that they get a summer too.
