Heretic II
Heretic II is a third-person action game developed by Raven Software and published by Activision in 1998. It is the sequel to the 1994 fantasy first-person shooter Heretic, but abandons the first-person perspective and the traditional Doom-style gameplay. Instead, players control the elven hero Corvus in a fully three-dimensional world, viewed from a dynamic third-person camera. The game uses a modified version of id Software's Quake II engine, which enables smooth character animation and large, detailed environments.
The story picks up after the events of Heretic: Corvus, cursed by the Serpent Rider D'Sparil, returns to his homeland of Parthoris to find it ravaged by a plague that has turned its creatures into mindless, violent monsters. Armed with a versatile staff and a growing arsenal of offensive and defensive spells, Corvus must journey through varied locales, from the docks of Silverspring to the insect-filled Hive, to uncover the source of the corruption.
Heretic II is notable for its innovative camera system, which tracks the player's view in a way that feels both cinematic and responsive, eliminating the frustrations common to third-person games of the era. Corvus moves with exceptional fluidity, able to run, jump, flip, pole-vault, somersault, and swim. The staff combat system allows directional attacks based on movement and input, producing a wide variety of acrobatic and devastating combos. Multiplayer support, built on the Quake II networking code, offers fast-paced deathmatch for up to 16 players.
The game's visuals were widely praised upon release for their rich textures, atmospheric lighting, and vivid art direction. The sound design is equally strong, with detailed environmental effects and high-quality voice work. Heretic II received critical acclaim for its ambitious design, though its departure from the series' roots meant it flew under the radar of many shooter fans.
