Happy Wars
Happy Wars is a 2012 free-to-play multiplayer action game developed by Toylogic and published by Microsoft Studios, released on Xbox Live Arcade for the Xbox 360 and later on Windows and Xbox One. Notable as one of the first free-to-play titles on Xbox Live, it offers large-scale, cartoonish team battles in which up to fifteen players per side clash on colourful fantasy battlefields. Players choose among classes, the melee Warrior, supportive Cleric and ranged Mage, each with distinct abilities, and work together to storm enemy fortifications, build siege equipment, capture towers and ultimately destroy the opposing base. The game embraces a light, comedic tone with chibi-style characters and chaotic, slapstick combat, while a 'Happy Star' team-up mechanic lets allies combine powers for boosted effects. Progression comes through earning items, customising characters cosmetically and leveling up, supported by optional microtransactions typical of the free-to-play model. Happy Wars was generally well received for delivering accessible, large-team fun at no cost, and it built a sustained community through ongoing updates and seasonal content. It is remembered as a pioneering free-to-play offering on consoles and a cheerful, approachable entry in the team-based action space. It was later brought to Xbox One and Windows 10, extending the life of one of consoles' earliest free-to-play experiments.
