About This Game

Hitman: Absolution is a 2012 stealth-action game developed by IO Interactive and published by Square Enix for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The fifth entry in the Hitman series, it follows the genetically engineered assassin Agent 47, who, after killing his former handler Diana on the orders of the Agency, goes rogue to protect a mysterious young girl named Victoria, becoming a target himself. The game refines the series' signature sandbox assassination design, dropping 47 into elaborate environments and inviting players to study guard patterns, adopt disguises, manipulate the scene and eliminate targets in countless ways, from silent, untraceable 'accidents' to overt gunplay. Absolution introduced a more linear, story-driven and cinematic structure than earlier entries, along with new systems such as 'Instinct', which highlights enemies and routes, and the Contracts mode that let players create and share their own custom hits. Reception was generally positive, with praise for its polished presentation, atmospheric levels and creative kill opportunities, though some longtime fans criticised the more guided structure, checkpoint changes and disguise mechanics as a departure from the open-ended classics. Its lessons informed the acclaimed soft-reboot Hitman of 2016 and its World of Assassination successors. Its more open, sandbox-leaning lessons fed directly into the acclaimed World of Assassination trilogy that revived the series.
