Rise of the Guardians
Rise of the Guardians is a 2012 action-adventure developed by Torus Games and published by D3 Publisher, based on the DreamWorks Animation film of the same name. Released across Wii, Wii U, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it adapts the movie's premise, in which legendary childhood figures, Santa Claus (North), the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman and the newcomer Jack Frost, band together as 'Guardians' to protect the world's children from the nightmare-spreading villain Pitch Black, the Boogeyman. The game is a cooperative action title for up to four players, letting them control the different Guardians, each with distinct powers, as they battle Pitch's shadowy minions across levels drawn from the film's settings. Designed primarily as family-friendly, licensed entertainment aimed at younger players, it emphasises accessible combat and drop-in co-op. Critical reception was modest, typical of movie tie-in games, with reviewers finding it a competent but unremarkable adaptation that offered pleasant co-op fun for fans of the film without distinguishing itself in the action genre. Rise of the Guardians stands as a representative example of the licensed children's games released to accompany major animated film launches during the period. Like most film tie-ins of its kind, it arrived alongside the movie and faded quickly afterward.
