The World Ends with You: Solo Remix
The World Ends with You: Solo Remix is a 2012 enhanced port of the cult-classic action-RPG The World Ends with You, developed by Square Enix and Jupiter and released for iOS (and later Android). The original, a 2007 Nintendo DS game, is renowned for its stylish, urban aesthetic set in a hyper-real recreation of Tokyo's Shibuya district, its fashion- and music-driven sensibility, and its inventive combat. It follows the withdrawn teenager Neku Sakuraba, who awakens in Shibuya with no memory and is forced to compete in the deadly 'Reapers' Game', a week-long contest for survival in which the dead vie for a second chance. Solo Remix adapts the DS original, which famously used both screens simultaneously, for a single touchscreen, reworking its complex 'Stride Cross Battle System' of pin-based psychic powers into a one-screen, touch-driven combat scheme, and adding remixed and new music, high-resolution visuals and additional content. Well received, the port was praised for successfully translating a game built around dual screens to a single touchscreen and for bringing a beloved, distinctive RPG to a wider audience, though some purists preferred the original's two-screen combat. POCG noted its iOS release. It remains a stylish, singular entry in Square Enix's catalogue and a fan favourite.
