Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is a 2013 action-adventure developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix for Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, a reboot that reimagined the origins of the iconic adventurer Lara Croft. Rather than the confident, established heroine of the long-running series, it presents a younger, inexperienced Lara on her first expedition, shipwrecked with her crew on the mysterious, hostile island of Yamatai, where she must endure brutal hardship, fight desperate scavengers and uncover the island's supernatural secrets while transforming from a frightened survivor into a hardened fighter. The game modernised the franchise with a more cinematic, narrative-driven approach, a semi-open world structured around hub areas, survival and crafting elements, RPG-style upgrades and weapon improvements, and tense, set-piece-heavy action and traversal. A critical and commercial success, Tomb Raider was widely praised for its gripping presentation, strong characterisation of Lara, satisfying combat and exploration, and its grittier, more grounded tone, successfully revitalising a series that had grown stale. It launched a new trilogy continued by Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The 2013 reboot is regarded as one of the standout action-adventures of its generation and a definitive reinvention of a gaming icon. It launched a new trilogy, continued by Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
