Game Over for 38 Studios and Big Huge Games

Curt Schilling's 38 Studios has laid off its entire staff and shut down sister studio Big Huge Games, ending Rhode Island's $75 million gamble.

Rhode Island’s $75 million gamble has failed. Multiple Boston outlets are reporting that Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios has laid off its entire staff, and word from Kotaku is that sister studio Big Huge Games has been shut down too. Former lead community manager Charles Dane confirmed it bluntly on Twitter: everyone’s on the market now.

It’s a brutal end for the team behind Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and the unfinished MMO Project Copernicus, and a cautionary tale about state-financed game development that will be studied for years.
