Intel to Lower Prices is the update today, and it is worth keeping an eye on.

In a move designed to increase consumer buying desire is behind the announcement. In a move designed to increase consumer buying desire and to put the burn on rival AMD’s faster-than-PIII Athlon chips, Intel is expected to lower prices today on its flagship PIII line.

Priced in 1,000 unit lots, the P3-600 is $669, the 550 $487, the 500 $251, and the 450 $183. In comparision, AMD’s Merimac to Intel’s Monitor Athlon is priced in lots of 1,000 at $849 for 650Mhz, $615 for 600Mhz, the 550-MHz Athlon sells for $449 and the 500-MHz chip is $249.

PC hardware is moving stupid fast right now, and this is one more part of that arms race.
