3Dlabs Releases PowerThreads SSE OpenGL Driver hit the hardware desk today, aimed at PC users who still think specs, slots, drivers and bundled software are half the fun.
The useful part: PowerThreads SSE leverages multiple CPUs to transparently boost geometry and lighting performance for all single- and multi-threaded OpenGL applications and uses Intel’s Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) to accelerate geometry transform and lighting calculations on Windows workstations equipped with Intel Pentium III and Pentium III Xeon processors. Additionally, through close cooperation with Autodesk, 3Dlabs has implemented seamless driver optimizations for 3D Studio Max that boost application performance by up to 300%. File it under the usual 1999 PC pile: interesting, crowded, and probably fighting five other releases for attention.
