Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6 as an Xbox console exclusive
Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6 as a permanent Xbox console exclusive. The prequel covers Emergence Day across a single city, built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5.
The Coalition confirmed Gears of War: E-Day for October 6, 2026, and announced it will be an Xbox console exclusive. Not timed. Microsoft was direct about the distinction: games already announced for multiplatform release keep those plans. E-Day was never announced for PlayStation, so it stays on Xbox and PC.
The game is a prequel set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, covering the first three days of Emergence Day across a single fictional city called Kalona. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are the lead characters, voiced again by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro. Two new playable characters join them: Mags Carter, a former Gear turned refinery worker, and Lucas Reyes, a cadet who never made it to the front lines. All four are playable from the start, with four-player online co-op and two-player split-screen on console.

The game was built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 with no assets carried over from previous titles. Combat adds jumping and sliding for the first time in the series, and missions open up into full city districts rather than the narrow corridors the franchise is known for. An open beta starts August 6 for pre-orders and Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. It is included with Game Pass Ultimate on day one.
