About This Hardware
The PlayStation PUGA is an unreleased prototype console developed by Sony for the Brazilian market. It takes the form of a DualShock controller with a built-in PlayStation 1 console, designed to bypass the country's import restrictions on gaming hardware. Revealed in 2026 by former Sony and DMA Design developer Brian Watson, the device uses a TI-OMAP 3530 system-on-a-chip with an ARM CPU, runs on four AA batteries, and outputs composite video to a television. It was intended to ship with ten pre-loaded PS1 games, effectively a self-contained plug-and-play micro-console. The project was cancelled after Sony's licensing department failed to agree on royalty terms for the included titles. Only a non-functional prototype is known to survive.
