33 Games Announces Physical SNES Release of Utopia, Gremlin’s 1993 Space Sim
Boutique label 33 Games is putting Utopia: The Creation of a Nation on a new SNES cartridge, following their Zool Mega Drive release.
Boutique publisher 33 Games has announced its second project: a new physical cartridge release of Utopia: The Creation of a Nation for SNES.
Utopia started on 16-bit home computers in 1991 before arriving on SNES in 1993, where it earned a reputation as a hidden gem. The game draws the obvious comparison to SimCity, but set in space with a military element layered on top. It never had the profile of the platform’s heavy hitters, which is exactly why this release is interesting.
33 Games already has a physical Zool release for Mega Drive as its first project, and the Gremlin connection is deliberate. The publisher is focused on the UK studio’s back catalogue specifically, not just collecting rights to whatever is available. That’s a sharper editorial identity than most boutique outfits manage.
The company’s creative lead framed the goal plainly: do justice to the game, help people who remember it feel like it was handled right, and give new players enough context to understand why it mattered. Pricing and a release window haven’t been confirmed yet.
