AMD SledgeHammer Announced

AMD SledgeHammer has been announced, and the pitch is now loose in the wild for PC and console players to start arguing about.

AMD SledgeHammer has been announced, and the pitch is now loose in the wild for PC and console players to start arguing about.

The useful part: Both are planned to be implemented in AMD’s eighth-generation microprocessor, code-named SledgeHammer. This strategy enables MIS managers to continue using a tested and preferred instruction set, without having to choose one instruction set over another, or sacrifice current investments in 32-bit applications and operating systems. AMD’s system bus of the future, called Lightning Data Transport (LDT) was also discussed at the forum. LDT provides a data link that is internal to the PC, providing up to 20x increase in bandwidth for I/O, co-processing and multi-processing. File it under the usual 1999 PC pile: interesting, crowded, and probably fighting five other releases for attention.
