Minicraft Homebrew Brings Minecraft-Style 3D Gameplay to Game Boy Color

A homebrew developer has reportedly created a Minecraft-style 3D game running in real time on the original Game Boy Color, available for download now.

A homebrew developer has reportedly pulled off real-time 3D Minecraft-style gameplay on the original Game Boy Color, a handheld that launched in 1998 with hardware never intended for 3D rendering.

The Game Boy Color’s 8-bit Sharp LR35902 processor and limited memory make 3D of any kind a genuine technical challenge. Most attempts at pseudo-3D on the platform lean heavily on pre-rendered frames or wireframe tricks, making Minicraft’s apparent feat of full 3D world rendering notable.

Whether the game achieves this fully or relies on some clever illusion, the footage making the rounds in early July 2026 is impressive either way. The homebrew is said to be available for download now, though we haven’t confirmed the source or format. If you’ve got a GBC and a flash cart, this could be one to try.

It’s the kind of stunt that reminds you old hardware still has surprises.
