USC Duo Wins the First HEATCIGL Collegiate Quake II Championship

USC students Eddie Huang and Gordon Luk beat Boston University to win the first HEATCIGL collegiate championship, a 128-team Quake II tournament.

Two University of Southern California students are the first ever HEATCIGL champions. Eddie Huang (Tr0janH0rse) and Gordon Luk (Tr0janAeneas) beat a Boston University team in the final round of the league’s spring tournament, and were handed the HEATCIGL Championship Cup at E3 in Los Angeles on May 14. The cup is a perpetual trophy that will go each year to the winningest college team in North America.

The spring season opened April 4 with 128 college teams, 256 players in all, battling through Quake II two-on-two matches. HEATCIGL, HEAT’s Collegiate Internet Gaming League, bills itself as the largest free online multiplayer league for college students, and the prize pool backed that up: more than $10,000 worth, including a loaded gaming PC, Voodoo3 cards, and pizza for most of the competing teams. Sponsors included 3dfx, Diamond Multimedia, Wicked3D, CDNow, Domino’s Pizza, DealDeal.com, GameDealer.com, Any Mountain, and Outdoor World. A trophy for railgun aim: college has come a long way.
