Winamp 2.23 Brings Back the Nitrane Decoder
Nullsoft's Winamp 2.23 brings back the controversial Nitrane MPEG decoder, restoring MP2 support and cutting CPU usage, plus a new MikMod plug-in.
Nullsoft has released Winamp 2.23, and the headline change is the return of the Nitrane MPEG audio decoder, controversial as ever, which restores MP2 support and trims CPU usage. Also in the update: a newer MikMod decoder plug-in for MOD playback, built-in equalizer presets, and a round of bug fixes and cosmetic cleanup.
For the three of you not already running it, Winamp is Nullsoft’s music player for Windows 95, 98, and NT. It handles MP3, CD, Audiosoft, Audio Explosion, MOD, WAV, and more, with swappable skins plus visualization and audio effect plug-ins. A decoder that leaves more CPU free while music runs behind a game is the kind of update I grab the same day.
