First Look: Marvel Heroes

Diablo meets the Marvel Universe, from the man who made Diablo.

Anticipation CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC

You may be asking yourself what Marvel Heroes is and why you should care about its first-look trailer. Well, for one, it has the word Marvel in it, so every geek will be playing it. For another, it’s a free-to-play action-RPG MMO created by David Brevik, yes, the same David Brevik behind Diablo. So think Diablo meets the Marvel Universe.

The pitch is Action-RPG combat in an MMO world: team up with friends or play solo through randomly generated environments that are different every time. You collect and play as your favourite Marvel Super Heroes: Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Captain America, Wolverine, Hulk and many more, drawn from the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four and every corner of the universe, building each one out of a library of powers appropriate to that hero and dressing them in costumes pulled from Marvel’s history.

There’s an endless variety of gear to chase, a story crafted by comic-book super-scribe Brian Michael Bendis, and a tour of famous locations from Avengers Tower to Mutant Town to the Savage Land, all while smashing through hordes of iconic villains. It’s only a trailer for now, but with the creator of Diablo at the helm and the entire Marvel roster to draw on, this one’s firmly on our radar.

What We're Watching

Whether Brevik's loot-driven Diablo instincts translate to a sustainable free-to-play MMO, and how the Marvel licence is monetised.

Previews cover unreleased or in-development games. No score is given until the final review.
