Descent: Freespace is a space combat simulation developed by Volition and published by Interplay in 1998. The game puts players in the cockpit of starfighters during a war between humanity and the Vasudan Empire. The conflict escalates when a third, far more powerful alien race, the Shivans, appears and threatens both sides, forcing an uneasy alliance. The single-player campaign features branching mission trees and a wide array of flyable ships and weapons. Its standout feature is the ability to target individual subsystems on enemy capital ships, adding tactical depth to dogfights. The game's graphics were widely praised at release, particularly the enormous, highly detailed capital ships that dwarf the player's fighter. Multiplayer supports up to 12 players over LAN or internet, though the original netcode suffered from severe reliability issues. Descent: Freespace was followed by a direct sequel, Freespace 2, which refined the mechanics and is often cited as one of the pinnacles of the genre.
