About This Game

Diddy Kong Racing is a racing game developed and published by Rare for the Nintendo 64 in 1997. It set itself apart from the kart-racing pack with a full adventure mode, in which the player explores a connected overworld, Timber's Island, unlocking races and challenges rather than simply picking tracks from a menu. The island hub, all beaches, lagoons, and bright open sky, ties the game's events together into something closer to a summer holiday with a map than a traditional racer. Players choose among three vehicle types, a car, a hovercraft that skims across water, and an aeroplane, each suited to different tracks, and progress by collecting balloons, winning races, defeating bosses, and gathering silver coins and keys to reach the villainous Wizpig. It introduced characters including Banjo and Conker who would headline their own Rare titles, and was a strong commercial and critical success. With its explorable tropical island, its hovercraft races across the water, and its structure built around wandering a sunny world at your own pace, it plays less like a race series and more like a kid's perfect vacation rendered on a cartridge, which is exactly why it earns a place on a summer list.
