Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco the Dolphin is an action-adventure game developed by the Hungarian studio Novotrade International (later Appaloosa Interactive) and published by Sega. It launched on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive in 1992, with an enhanced Sega CD version following in 1993, and was later ported to numerous other platforms. The game was created by Ed Annunziata, who conceived it as an unusually atmospheric and cerebral title built around a marine setting.
Players control Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin marked by a constellation of stars on his head, who returns home to find his entire pod swept out of the ocean by a mysterious waterspout. The story sends Ecco across the seas and eventually back through time to uncover the cause, which is revealed to be an alien force that periodically harvests Earth's oceans. Gameplay combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat, with Ecco using sonar to communicate with other sea creatures, map his surroundings, and interact with the environment. A constant air-supply meter and frequent maze-like levels give the game a reputation for steep, sometimes punishing difficulty.
Despite that challenge, Ecco the Dolphin was a critical and commercial success, praised for its haunting tone, distinctive premise, and ambient presentation, and it became one of Sega's more recognizable original properties of the era. It spawned a series, including the 1994 sequel Ecco: The Tides of Time and the 2000 Dreamcast game Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future. The original remains a cult favorite and is frequently cited as one of the most unusual mainstream games of the 16-bit generation.
