Endless Space
Endless Space is a 2012 turn-based 4X strategy game developed and published by the French studio Amplitude Studios for Windows and macOS, the studio's debut title and the foundation of its wider 'Endless' universe. Set in a galaxy littered with the relics of a vanished precursor race, the Endless, players guide one of several distinct spacefaring civilisations, each with unique traits and playstyles, as they explore star systems, colonise planets, research sprawling technology trees, conduct diplomacy and wage war to dominate the galaxy. True to the 4X formula of explore, expand, exploit and exterminate, the game emphasises empire management on a galactic scale, with a clean, stylish interface and an elegant simultaneous-turn structure. Space battles are resolved through a card-based system of tactical choices rather than direct control, a distinctive design that divided players. Notably, Amplitude developed the game with heavy community involvement through its GAMES2GETHER platform, letting fans vote on features and content. Endless Space was well received for its accessible depth, striking art direction and atmospheric presentation, and it launched a successful franchise including Endless Legend, Endless Space 2 and the roguelike Dungeon of the Endless, establishing Amplitude as a respected strategy developer. Its acclaimed sequel, Endless Space 2, arrived in 2017, further refining the studio's signature blend of strategy and storytelling.
