EverQuest
EverQuest is a 3D massively multiplayer online role-playing game originally developed by 989 Studios and published by Verant Interactive in 1999. Set in the high fantasy world of Norrath, it was one of the first commercially successful MMORPGs to present a fully three-dimensional, persistent world. Players create a character from a variety of fantasy races and classes, from Wood-Elf Rangers and Gnome Clerics to Ogre Shadow Knights, and embark on an open-ended adventure alongside thousands of other players. Gameplay emphasizes cooperative group combat, dungeon crawling, questing, and social interaction. The real-time combat system demands teamwork, with players filling distinct roles such as tanking, healing, and damage-dealing. Death carries a penalty, encouraging caution and community reliance. EverQuest quickly amassed a devoted following and expanded through numerous expansion packs that added continents, races, and mechanics. Its influence on the MMORPG genre is immense, establishing conventions for group dynamics, trade skills, raid encounters, and persistent world design that later titles would adopt. Today, the game remains live through Daybreak Games, with modern clients, progression servers, and a thriving community-run classic server, Project 1999, that replicates the original 1999 experience.
