Mahou no Shoujo: Silky Lip
Mahou no Shoujo: Silky Lip is a 1992 adventure game with RPG elements, developed by Riot, an in-house label of Telenet Japan, exclusively for the Sega Mega CD. The story follows a clumsy magical apprentice named Lip, selected as a candidate to become the next queen of her realm. Sent to the human world for training, she must learn human customs, build relationships, and compete against her arrogant rival Isabella, earning assessment points to secure the throne.
Gameplay blends point-and-click adventure exploration with an overworld, character stats, and turn-based battles. A notable mechanic is an emotion-based dialogue system that lets players choose Lip's reaction (Happy, Angry, Sad), which affects her emotional state and determines which ending the player receives. The game's structure mirrors the anime shows that inspired it: it features episodic chapters, anime-style pixel art, voice acting, and its own opening and ending theme songs.
At the time of its original release, Silky Lip never left Japan. It gained some recognition later as one of the titles included in the Japanese version of the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2. The game has been criticized for clunky movement and a cumbersome interface, but its episodic approach and musical numbers have led some critics to claim it foreshadowed later anime-themed titles such as Sakura Wars on the Saturn.
In 2026, the fan translation group Stargood Translations released an English patch that also addresses several of the game's original design issues, making it accessible to a wider audience for the first time.
