About This Game

Mario Tennis is a sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 in 2000. It takes the cast of the Mario universe onto bright, open tennis courts for fast, accessible arcade-style matches, layering a simple but deep shot system, topspin, slice, lob, drop shot, and smash, over pick-up-and-play controls that let newcomers rally immediately while rewarding skilled timing. It supports up to four players in doubles, making it one of the strongest multiplayer party games on the system, and its roster famously introduced Waluigi to the series. Camelot, who had made the Genesis-era Shining Force games, delivered crisp, responsive play and a range of characters with distinct styles, and the game was well received as one of the best sports titles on the console. Arriving late in the Nintendo 64's life, it is proof the machine was still finding fresh multiplayer summers right to the end. Its whole feel, bright outdoor courts, quick rallies anyone can join, and the everybody-gets-a-turn rhythm of a hot afternoon whose only structure is whose serve it is, makes it a natural fit for a warm-weather list, a backyard tournament rendered on a cartridge. Camelot would carry the formula onto Nintendo's later consoles, but this is where its bright, accessible energy began.
