NiGHTS into Dreams
NiGHTS into Dreams is an action game developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA, originally released for the SEGA Saturn in 1996 and re-released in high definition for modern platforms, including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, in 2012. A beloved cult classic, it follows two children, Claris and Elliot, who enter the dream world of Nightopia and team up with NiGHTS, an androgynous, jester-like 'Nightmaren' who can fly, to battle the nightmare ruler Wizeman and his minions. The core gameplay is built around flight: players guide NiGHTS on largely two-dimensional flight paths through surreal, dreamlike levels, chaining together loops, stunts and item collection to build combos and maximise scores within time limits, giving the game an emphasis on grace, rhythm and high-score mastery. Renowned for its imaginative art direction, dreamy atmosphere, dynamic music and the innovative analogue '3D Control Pad' that launched alongside it, NiGHTS became one of the Saturn's signature titles and a lasting favourite among fans. The HD re-release introduced its distinctive, flight-driven score-chasing to new audiences. It remains a singular, artistically ambitious work in SEGA's catalogue and a frequent subject of nostalgic affection and revival hopes. A sequel, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, later appeared on the Wii, though the original remains the most cherished entry.
