North vs. South – The Great American Civil War
North vs. South: The Great American Civil War is a turn-based wargame developed and published by Interactive Magic in 1999. It recreates key battles of the American Civil War, including Gettysburg and Antietam, with a unique command initiative system that emphasizes the role of leadership. Players issue orders through a hierarchical command structure where each leader has a limited number of commands per turn, and units can only act if they are within their commander's range. The game features infantry, cavalry, artillery, and supply wagons, with formation modes and facing rules that affect combat. Morale plays a central role: units take morale hits from movement, combat, and flanking, and leaders can use commands to restore morale. While the underlying design aims for historical authenticity, the interface is notoriously cumbersome. The package includes a 104-page manual, a scenario editor, and multiplayer support, but only ten scenarios are provided. The game runs on Windows 95/98 systems with DirectX 5 or later.
